A purifier that seems to have stopped working is, far more often than an electrical fault, a filter that reached the end of its stated life months ago while the fan kept running regardless. Fit is the specification that matters first: HEPA filters are cut to a model's housing, a compatible-model list is published by the maker, and a filter a few millimeters out simply will not seat. After fit: the actual filtration grade claimed — "True HEPA" and "HEPA-style" are not the same claim, whatever the packaging design suggests — the manufacturer's stated replacement interval, and whether the filter comes from the purifier's own maker or a third party, a distinction we report plainly rather than judge.

Can a particle filter be washed?

No: water destroys the fibrous structure that does the filtering. Only pre-filters explicitly marked washable take it.

How do I know a filter is saturated?

It visibly greys and the airflow drops. The unit's indicator counts hours, not actual saturation.

Are generic filters as good as originals?

It depends on the filter area and the frame sealing. A badly fitted filter lets air past the sides, which cancels its function.

Does vacuuming a filter extend its life?

It removes the surface deposit from the pre-filter. On the fine media, vacuuming can damage the fibers.

What happens if the filter is never changed?

Do I need a pre-filter?
