Ultrasonic humidifiers are near-silent and raise humidity fastest, but with hard water they can leave a fine white mineral dust on nearby surfaces — a real trade-off the marketing rarely mentions. Evaporative humidifiers use a wick and a fan, self-regulate somewhat as the air dries the wick, and produce no dust, at the cost of more running noise and a filter to replace.
