Who each type suits

Before buying an appliance

What is a hygrometer for at home?

Are the readings accurate?

Domestic sensors have a noticeable margin: two devices side by side rarely show the same value. It is the order of magnitude that counts.

Where should the device go?

In the living area, away from a window, a radiator and a cold wall. Those three places completely distort the reading.

Can a hygrometer be calibrated?

Some models can be set with a saturated salt method. On most domestic devices it is not provided for.

What does relative humidity mean?

The amount of water in the air relative to what the air can hold at that temperature. That is why heating lowers relative humidity without removing any water.

Do I need one per room?

The differences between rooms are often large. Two or three sensors reveal very different situations in the same home.

Is the min/max memory useful?

It shows what happened while you were away, particularly the night-time peaks. Far more informative than an instant reading.
