Why is the one-to-six-inch opening such an advantage?

Because the exhaust hose shelf of this site carries three different diameters — 5, 5.1 and 5.9 inches — and a rigid adapter fits one of them. A drawstring in fabric closes on whatever you have, including a dryer vent or a grow-tent duct.

Is fabric as good as plates?

Differently good. Plates are rigid, lockable and reusable season after season; fabric packs away, needs no tools and does not care about the hose size. The maker replaced a zip with a drawstring specifically because zips burst and slipped — which is an honest account of the weakness of the format.

Why wait 24 hours?

For the adhesive tape on the window frame to cure before the hose pulls on it. The listing also says to clean the dust off the frame first. Those two sentences are the only installation guidance published on this shelf, and they are the difference between a seal that holds all summer and one that peels in a week.
