  • The only thermostat on this shelf with outdoor temperature, humidity and a forecast on the device itself
  • Lists what it will not work with as precisely as what it will — electric baseboard at 120–240 V, heating-only oil furnaces without a C-wire
  • The most expensive thermostat on this shelf, and it requires a C-wire — three thermostats here do not

Best for: A forced-air or hydronic system with a C-wire already present, where the thermostat should be the room’s weather station too

The wall becomes a weather station

Eight thermostats on this shelf tell you how warm the room is. This one tells you how warm it is outside, how humid, and what tomorrow brings.

That is not a comfort feature, it is a diagnostic one: a house that needs the furnace at 50 °F outside has a different problem from one that needs it at 20 °F.

And the sentence to read first

C-wire required, stated three times with a note about adapters.

If your wall has four wires and no common, this thermostat is a two-part purchase. The Sensi on this shelf works without one on most systems and costs less.

The questions that keep coming up

What is a C-wire and do I have one?

A common wire that gives the thermostat continuous power rather than borrowing it from the heating circuit. This thermostat requires one and says so three times, including a note that an adapter may be needed. Three thermostats on this shelf — the Sensi, the Suuwer and the riseem S3001 — work without one on most systems.

Why does the outdoor reading matter?

Because it tells you whether the heating is struggling or the house is leaking. Nine thermostats on this shelf, and this is the only one that puts the outside temperature, the humidity and tomorrow’s forecast on the wall.

How is it different from the other Honeywell color thermostat here?

By the published text: this one adds the outdoor readings and the forecast, names Cortana among the platforms and itemizes the box. The RTH9585WF publishes the fan Circulate duty — about 35 per cent of the time — which this one does not, and costs less.
