The best portable air conditioner for 2026

BTU/h is the number on the box; the number that decides whether a unit is worth owning is closer to noise, drainage and the window kit. All three of these publish a real, Keepa-verified price on at least four European markets.

A small room, and the lowest price

The Temprium YPK11S is first for a bedroom or home office up to about 20 m (66 ft)². At 7,000 BTU it is the smallest-capacity unit of the three, and the cheapest — but its noise figure is published for sleep mode only, and Temprium doesn’t state a standard operating dB(A) rating.

Quiet, drainage-free, and confirmed on four markets

The Dreo AC318S is the pick when quiet running and hands-off condensate handling matter more than the lowest price. Dreo publishes both an operating and a sound-power noise figure — the most complete of the three — and describes a drainage-free system rated to work up to 90% humidity. It has no fixed room-size rating; Dreo instead gives a sizing formula of roughly 210 W per square meter.

A larger room, and heating as well as cooling

The Gymax KU65297IJ is the only one of the three with a published heating mode alongside cooling, dehumidifying and fan — rated for rooms up to 45 m (148 ft)². It is also, by a wide margin, the most expensive and the heaviest at 34 kg (75 lb), and at the time of checking it was confirmed for sale on the German market only.

What we would not do

Buy on BTU alone. Gymax’s 16,000 BTU sounds like the obvious upgrade over Temprium’s 7,000, but for a 20 m (66 ft)² bedroom it is more capacity, weight and price than the room needs — and its market availability is currently the narrowest of the three.

Which unit does your room need?

You can run a hose out of a window
A portable unit works, provided the opening is sealed properly. Without sealing, it draws back in what it has just cooled.
Your window is tilt-and-turn
The sealing kit becomes the real subject: most supplied kits are made for sliding windows.
You want the best performance
A dual-hose model, which takes its condenser air from outside instead of from the room.
You want quiet
No portable is quiet: the compressor is in the room. That is the format's structural limit.

Picking by the room you have

Bedroom during a heatwave

Night use: compressor noise decides whether it is tolerated. Many units cool well and wake you just as effectively.

Home office

One room, one person, daytime. The favorable case, and the unit can be switched off when you leave.

A rental where you cannot drill

A portable is often the only possible option. The compromise is accepted from the start.

Loft room

The hardest case: heavy solar gain, a roof window, complicated sealing. The format shows its limits there.

What is worth looking at, and what is not

One hose or two
A single-hose unit creates negative pressure and pulls hot air in through every gap in the home. A dual-hose takes its condenser air from outside: it is the most important difference and the least advertised.
Sealing the window
Without it, the unit fights the hot air it lets in. The supplied kit is often rudimentary, and it is a cost to plan for.
Noise, measured indoors
On a portable, everything is in the room: compressor, fan, expansion. Quoted figures are often those of fan-only mode.
Condensate handling
Depending on the model the water evaporates through the hose, collects in a tank, or drains continuously. A full tank stopping the unit in the middle of the night is a classic.

Where buyers go wrong

Resting the hose in a part-open window
It is the commonest use and the one that ruins performance: hot air pours back in while the unit exhausts itself. Sealing is not a finishing detail.
Leaving the hose long and coiled
The hose radiates the heat it is carrying. Long, bent or draped through the room, it gives part of it back where you do not want it.
Buying on BTUs alone
An oversized unit cycles without dehumidifying properly and uses more. Capacity is chosen on volume and exposure, not at the top of the budget.
Believing in "hose-free"
An air conditioner without an exhaust does not exist: appliances sold that way are evaporative coolers, which remove no heat from the room.

By the household you are in

The tenant
A portable, a serious sealing kit, and acceptance of the noise. Often the only solution available.
The office
A modest-capacity unit, well sealed, switched off at the end of the day. The most satisfactory case.
The one who can install
A fixed split gives service on another scale, for an installation cost to weigh against the comfort obtained.

Filters, servicing and working life

A portable air conditioner fouls through its filters and suffers from the water it makes. A blocked filter drops the airflow and the output, and a tank forgotten at the end of the season smells on the first restart.

  • Clean the filters very regularly during the season.
  • Drain the condensate completely before storage.
  • Run it in fan-only mode for a few minutes before final shutdown, to dry the exchanger.
  • Store the hose relaxed rather than compressed, so it does not deform.

Safety

A heavy appliance on castors, with a hot hose and a heavily loaded socket.

  • Dedicated socket, never an extension lead: consumption is high and continuous.
  • Do not run the hot hose against a curtain or furniture.
  • Carry and store the unit upright.
  • Check the sealing does not block an escape route or a window needed for ventilation.

The picks, and the reasoning

  1. Temprium YPK11S-07C/3-W

    7,000 BTU · single-hose · app + voice control

A 7,000 BTU / 2.0 kW single-hose portable air conditioner for rooms up to 20 m (66 ft)², with touch-panel, remote, app and Alexa/Google Assistant control. Temprium states a built-in self-evaporation system that significantly cuts how often the tank needs draining, and ships a window seal kit it describes as fitting most European window types.

Best for: Renters or small bedrooms up to about 20 m (66 ft)² who want app and voice control without paying for a higher-BTU unit.

    7.2/10

  2. Dreo DR-HAC008S

    7,500 BTU · drainage-free · 45 dB(A)

A 7,500 BTU single-hose portable air conditioner Dreo positions for bedrooms and offices, built around what it calls a true drainage-free system: condensate is evaporated automatically via an internal pump and sensors, Dreo says, even up to 90% humidity. Operating noise is published at 45 dB(A) (61 dB sound power), with control through the Dreo app or Siri/Alexa/Google Home voice commands.

Best for: Bedrooms or offices where quiet operation and hands-off condensate handling matter more than a low upfront price.

  3. Gymax KU65297IJ-BMDE

    16,000 BTU · 4-in-1 with heating · up to 45 m (148 ft)²

A 16,000 BTU 4-in-1 portable air conditioner that adds a heating mode alongside cooling, dehumidifying and fan, for rooms Gymax rates up to 45 m (148 ft)². It's controlled by remote, on-unit panel, or WiFi through the 'Smart Life' app, and is the largest and most expensive of the four units in this comparison.

Best for: Larger rooms up to 45 m (148 ft)² where one appliance needs to both cool in summer and add supplementary heat, bought from a market where it's confirmed in stock.

The questions that keep coming up

Do I need the highest BTU rating I can afford?

Only if the room is genuinely large or poorly insulated. Temprium's 7,000 BTU unit is rated for up to 20 m (66 ft)² — plenty for a bedroom — and costs a third of the 16,000 BTU Gymax, which is built for rooms up to 45 m (148 ft)². Buying more capacity than the room needs mostly buys a bigger, heavier, noisier machine.

Which of these is quietest?

Dreo publishes the most complete noise figures of the three — 45 dB(A) operating, 61 dB sound power. Temprium only states a sleep-mode figure (53 dB(A)); Gymax publishes no noise rating at all.

Does a portable air conditioner use a lot?

Much more than a fan, and more than a fixed split for the same comfort, especially single-hose. Real consumption depends as much on the sealing as on the appliance.

Can it be used without venting the hose?

No: the extracted heat has to leave the room. With no exhaust, the unit warms the room instead of cooling it.

Do I have to empty the water regularly?

It depends on the model: some evaporate condensate through the hose, others collect it in a tank. On the latter, one humid night is enough to fill it and stop the unit.

Where should the unit stand?

Near the window to shorten the hose, clear on its grilles, and not against furniture. Every meter of hose saved improves the result.

Does dehumidify mode replace a dehumidifier?

It dries the air, but with an appliance built to cool: efficiency is lower and the room cools at the same time. For winter use, a dedicated dehumidifier suits better.

Why does my room never reach the setpoint?

Three causes, in order: inadequate sealing, a unit undersized for the volume, or uncontrolled solar gain. The first is by far the commonest.

Where these numbers come from

The units on this page are drawn from the catalog of this site. Figures are the ones the maker publishes and the ones on the Amazon listing; prices are what Keepa recorded on the date shown, and neither stands still. The order follows declared figures, the weight of stated strengths against stated limits, and price. Nothing on this site has been run in person, and no page here pretends otherwise.
